Neuron figure size & submission guidelines

Neuron publishes no figure-spec page of its own — its authors are directed to the shared Cell Press figure guidelines. Here they are, with the studio pre-set to match.

Column widths85 mm (1 column) · 114 mm (1.5 columns) · 174 mm (full page width)
Maximum sizeNo hard height limit — Cell Press recommends keeping a figure within 165 × 200 mm overall to leave room for margins and the legend; each figure must fit on a single page
ResolutionColour or greyscale at least 300 dpi · black-and-white at least 500 dpi · line art at least 1,000 dpi — all at the desired print size. There is no separate combination tier
Panel labelsCapital letters. (Parentheses are not specified in the guidelines — the preset uses the (A), (B), (C) form standard in published Cell Press articles)
Other textAbout 6–8 pt at the desired print size
FontArial only — fonts embedded
File formatsTIFF and PDF preferred for production; EPS, JPEG, PSD, PNG and CDX also accepted. TIFF recommended for bitmaps (LZW compression), EPS for vector images. Each figure file ≤ 20 MB; titles and legends must not be inside the image files
ColourRGB — and red and green should not be used together
Figure countResearch articles: no more than 8 figures and/or tables. Reports: no more than 4 (Neuron article-types page)
Open the studio — full width · 174 mmOpen the studio — single column · 85 mm

The button opens the studio with the width, export DPI and (A)-style labels already set. For line-art-heavy figures, export PDF or SVG from the studio — vector output sidesteps the 1,000 dpi raster tier entirely.

How it works

  1. Add your panels — drop in images or PDF pages; white margins are trimmed automatically.
  2. Arrange & label — the width, DPI and label style are already set for Neuron; drag panels into order.
  3. Export — free PNG at 100 DPI to check the layout; high-res PNG / SVG / PDF (300–1200 DPI) with a figure credit.

Pricing: free preview · Manuscript pack $7 (12 figures) · Researcher annual $79 · Lab annual $249. One credit exports one figure in any format, and re-exports of the same figure are free for 24 hours — built for revision rounds.
