PNAS figure size & submission guidelines
PNAS runs three column widths and the joint-highest line-art tier in this guide set. The exact widths and height come from PNAS's Digital Art Guidelines, which the submission page points authors to.
| Column widths | 87 mm (1 column) · 114 mm (1.5 columns) · 178 mm (2 columns) — images must be provided at final size |
|---|---|
| Maximum height | 225 mm (recommended maximum) |
| Resolution | Halftone (images without type) 300 dpi minimum · combination (images with type) 600–900 dpi · line art (monochrome) 1,000–1,200 dpi — all at publication size |
| Panel labels | Not specified in the author guidelines — the preset uses A, B, C capitals |
| Fonts | Arial, Helvetica, Times, Symbol, Mathematical Pi or European Pi — embed all fonts. After reduction, text should be no smaller than 6 pt and no larger than 12 pt |
| File formats | TIFF, EPS, PDF or PPT (TIFF/EPS/PDF preferred). Use LZW compression for TIFFs, not JPEG compression |
| Colour | RGB — all colour image files must be submitted in their original RGB colour |
The button opens the studio with the width, export DPI and label style already set. For line art, export PDF/SVG from the studio instead of raster — it satisfies the 1,000–1,200 dpi tier by being resolution-independent.
How it works
- Add your panels — drop in images or PDF pages; white margins are trimmed automatically.
- Arrange & label — the width, DPI and label style are already set for PNAS; drag panels into order.
- Export — free PNG at 100 DPI to check the layout; high-res PNG / SVG / PDF (300–1200 DPI) with a figure credit.
Pricing: free preview · Manuscript pack $7 (12 figures) · Researcher annual $79 · Lab annual $249. One credit exports one figure in any format, and re-exports of the same figure are free for 24 hours — built for revision rounds.
